PhD Program: Technology and Engineering-Oriented Research

PhD students enrolled in the PhD program Technology and Engineering-Oriented Research are members of the Graduate School of Medical and Health Sciences.

The focus of this PhD Program lies on the research and development of technologies whose application is relevant to health, and is particularly recommended for students of the Faculty of Medicine with Biomedical Engineering as their PhD subject.

Curriculum

Before graduating, GSMHS PhD students must obtain a minimum of 18 ECTS in parallel to their research. Each student's personalized study plan is drawn up in collaboration with the doctoral committee, in particular the first supervisor.

Students may tailor their curriculum to suit their interests, choosing from among the Master‘s and PhD courses offered by the University of Basel, GSMHS, GRACE but also other national or international Universities and Institutes. ECTS might be granted for:

  • Scientific and Methodolodical Courses and Lectures
  • Transferable Skills Courses (min 2 ECTS)
  • Research Seminars & Journal Clubs (max 4 ECTS)
  • Summer Schools & Workshops
  • Active Participation in Conferences (max 8 ECTS)
  • Organization of Conferences
  • Involvement in Teaching (max 4 ECTS)

To help PhD students enrolled in the program Technology and Engineering-Oriented Research plan their studies, we've compiled a list of recommended courses below.

Please, note that PhD Students enrolled in this program are required to attend the Seminar Series: Latest breakthroughs in Biomedical Engineering Research at least once during their studies.

Also note that, in addition to their Scientific and Methodolodical trainig, GSHMS PhD students must complete a minimum of 50 hours or 2 ECTS from at least two of the following domains:

    • Academic writing
    • Research Data Managment
    • Scientific Integrity
    • Science Communication

Furthermore, it is highly recommended that GSMHS PhD students participate in at least one event over 2 days to network with other PhD students.
