The Graduate School Medical & Health Sciences (GSMHS) is an interdisciplinary doctoral graduate school. In 2025, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science join forces within the new Graduate School Medical & Health Sciences (GSHMS), providing young researchers with a fascinating range of possibilities to make a difference through research.
PhD students in the GSMHS address population and system-oriented research; bioethics, policy and law in environment and medicine; infection biology and health; patient-oriented research as well as technology and engineering-oriented research. The GSHMS covers the doctoral subjects of Medicines Development, Biomedical Engineering, Epidemiology and Public Health, Infection Biology, Clinical Research, Medical Ethics, Nursing Science, Sport Science, and Insurance Medicine
The GSHMS emerged from the PhD Program Health Sciences (PPHS), that was initiated in 2012 at the University of Basel. Originally conceptualized as an optional support platform, PPHS was transformed into a structured PhD program in 2015, rooted in the Faculty of Medicine.
