The Graduate School Medical and Health Sciences (GSMHS) is an interdisciplinary graduate school. Since August 2025, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science have joined forces within the new GSMHS, providing junior researchers in medicine, health sciences, infection biology, bioethics, policy, and biomedical engineering with an inspiring environment for pursuing their research.
Our PhD students register in one of eight PhD subjects: Medicines Development, Biomedical Engineering, Epidemiology and Public Health, Infection Biology, Clinical Research, Medical Ethics, Nursing Science, Sport Science, and Insurance Medicine. Students can then join the PhD program of their choice: population- and system-oriented research; bioethics, policy, and law in environment and medicine; infection biology and health; patient-oriented research; as well as technology- and engineering-oriented research.
The GSMHS is the innovative result of many years of experience in PhD training at the University of Basel in interfaculty and multidisciplinary medical and health sciences. Former PhD programs of the Faculty of Medicine (Biomedical Engineering), the Faculty of Science (International PhD Program in Infection Biology), the interfaculty PhD Program Health Sciences (PPHS), and the Basel parts of inter-university programs in Public Health and Nursing Sciences (SPINE) were combined in the GSMHS.
We strive to educate, support and motivate PhD candidates in medical and health sciences to become the future leaders for our society across the world. We accompany our PhD candidates during their PhD study journey, between admission and defense of their doctoral thesis. Our focus is on training, networking and career development.
The GSMHS is creating and inspiring environment for PhD students in medicine, health sciences, infection biology, bioethics, policy and biomedical engineering to meet international standards.
