PhD Program: Population and System-Oriented Research

Welcome!

PhD students enrolled in the PhD program Population and System-Oriented Research are members of the Graduate School of Medical and Health Sciences.

The focus of this PhD Program lies on the prevalence and distribution of disease and health within the population, as well as how these are influenced by the organization of health and care systems, and by prevention and health promotion. This PhD program is particularly recommended for students of the Faculty of Medicine with Epidemiology and Public Health as well as Nursing Science as their PhD subject.

Curriculum

Before graduating, GSMHS PhD students must earn at least 18 ECTS alongside their research. Each student’s individual study plan is developed in collaboration with their doctoral committee, especially the first supervisor.

Students can tailor their curriculum to their interests, selecting from Master’s and PhD courses offered by the University of Basel, GSMHS, GRACE, as well as other national or international universities and institutes.

As outlined in the regulations, ECTS may be granted for:

  • Methods and Science Courses
  • Transferable Skills Courses (min. 2 ECTS)
  • Research Seminars & Journal Clubs (max. 4 ECTS)
  • Summer Schools & Workshops
  • Active Participation in Conferences (max. 8 ECTS)
  • Organization of Conferences
  • Involvement in Teaching (max. 4 ECTS)

GSHMS PhD students must complete a minimum of 2 ECTS from at least two of the following domains: 

  • Academic writing
  • Research Data Management
  • Scientific Integrity
  • Science Communication

To help PhD students enrolled in the Technology and Engineering-Oriented Research program plan their studies, we have compiled a list of recommended courses below.

Please note:

  • PhD students in this program are required to attend the ...  at least once during their studies.

  • In addition to scientific and methodological training, it is highly recommended that GSMHS PhD students participate in at least one multi-day event (minimum 2 days) to network with other PhD students.
